You do not need a perfect diet or a shelf full of specialty foods. The most consistent pattern for lowering LDL is to replace saturated fats with unsaturated fats and to eat more fiber-rich plant foods.

Saturated fat is found in fatty cuts of meat, processed meats, butter, cream, full-fat cheese, coconut oil, and many pastries. This does not mean these foods must never appear on your plate. It means that frequency and portion size matter, especially if your LDL is elevated.

Aim for a routine you can repeat. For many people, about 150 minutes a week of moderate activity is a reasonable benchmark, but even shorter sessions count. Strength training twice weekly is also valuable in midlife and later years, helping preserve muscle, balance, and metabolic health.

Weight loss can improve cholesterol for people who are carrying excess body fat, particularly around the abdomen. Yet weight is not the only measure of progress. Better food quality, more movement, improved blood pressure, and lower triglycerides are meaningful gains even if the scale barely shifts. Menopause can make body composition changes more noticeable, but it does not make improvement impossible.

When lifestyle changes are not enough

Lifestyle habits are foundational, but they cannot fully overcome every genetic pattern. Familial hypercholesterolemia, for example, can cause very high LDL from an early age. If your LDL is 190 mg/dL or higher, or if relatives have had early cardiovascular disease, bring this up with a clinician promptly.
